A Trip to Indiana…
Last month, I had the chance to visit Indiana for the first time, and it happened to be near Fort Wayne. The name Fort Wayne sounded familiar because of Kenny Keller from Fort Wayne Helicopters. I had been following Kenny’s videos for about as long as I had been producing my own helicopter training content. A quick Google search revealed that Kenny is now based out of Warsaw Airport (KASW) and operates under the new name Helicopter Online Ground School (H.O.G.S.). He shares the story of this transition in some of his videos and podcasts.
A Shared Journey in Making Helicopter Training Videos
Nearly 15 years ago, I began creating Helicopter Training Videos (beginning with SFAR 73 Awareness Training – now renamed SFAR 73 Ground Training) because there was a lack of dedicated content for student helicopter pilots. While there were airplane-centric resources like King Schools, helicopter-specific training materials were sparse.
Around the same time, Kenny began producing his own helicopter training videos. Although we had been aware of each other’s work for years, we had never met in person. Given that I was in the vicinity for a few days, I seized the opportunity to visit Kenny and the H.O.G.S. team at their hangar in Warsaw.
A Meaningful Meeting
I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with Kenny and Lindsey, diving deep into discussions about helicopter training.
It was clear that we share a common passion for helicopters and a commitment to enhancing safety and learning. I expressed my admiration for Kenny’s no-nonsense, down-to-earth approach to his content. With over 1,200 YouTube videos, a podcast, four books, and a wealth of free resources (see below), Kenny’s content has always resonated with me. I’ve never come across anything in his material that I would disagree with; our attitudes toward safety and education are quite aligned.
Exciting Innovations and Future Plans
One of the highlights of our discussion was Kenny’s latest project—the virtual assistant, or “Kenny’s Clone,” available at www.AskHOGS.com. This AI-driven tool searches through all H.O.G.S. content to provide answers to helicopter training questions around the clock. Users can interact with it via text or voice, and it even uses an AI-generated Kenny Keller voice for audio responses! During my testing, I found it remarkably effective. Check out the screenshots below to see it in action.
We also discussed making my recent ACS videos available to H.O.G.S. members and talked about potential collaboration projects between HTV and H.O.G.S. And, although we had planned to fly together, the R44 was unavailable this time. Hopefully, we can arrange another opportunity in the future.
